Canberra, Mar 25 (IBNS):  Australian cricket team captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner resigned from their positions on Sunday amid allegations that the two were involved in a ball tampering case.

According to reports, Smith and Warner conspired to change the condition of the ball using sticky tape and grit from the pitch during the third test against South Africa in Cape Town.

The Cricket Australia has already launched a probe into the ball-tampering case.

Reacting to the incident, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull slammed the team and expressed shock.

Speaking to media, he said: "We all woke up this morning shocked and bitterly disappointed by the news from South Africa.”

"It seemed completely beyond belief that the Australian cricket team had been involved in cheating," said he.

“After all, our cricketers are role models and cricket is synonymous with fair play. How can our team by engaged in cheating like this? It beggars belief," said the Aussie PM.
