Ashes: Australia extend lead, tighten grip over the match

London, July 18 (IBNS) England had yet another disappointing day as Australia picked up the remaining English wickets and then forged an unbeaten century plus stand for the opening wicket at the end of day three of the second Ashes encounter here on Saturday.

Resuming their batting on the overnight score of 85/4, England were bowled out for 312. Cook and Ben Stokes added 145 runs for the fifth wicket, until the latter perished for a personal score of 87.

His innings was laden with 13 boundaries and a six.

Cook departed for 96, falling four runs short of what could have been the southpaw’s 28th Test hundred. Moeen Ali (39) and Stuart Broad (21) were instrumental in taking England’s score past the 300 run-mark.

For the visitors, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Johnson picked up 3 wickets each. Coming in place of Shane Watson, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh picked up 2 wickets , while one each were picked by left arm pacer Mitchell Starc and off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Australia started off their second innings in a positive manner.

With the scoring rate over 4 runs per over they managed to score 108 in the 26 overs they faced in the day. David Warner was in his element, hitting 10 boundaries in his score of 60. Chris Rogers played steadily for his 44.

Australia have already extend their lead to 362 runs.
