A grand welcome accorded to Sindhu in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Aug 22 (IBNS): Shuttler PV Sindhu, silver medallist in the Rio Olympics, and her coach Pullela Gopichand, were give a grand welcome on their return to Hyderabad on Monday, according to media reports.

Gopichand had won the 2001 All England Open Badminton Championships.

Besides Sindhu's parents, P V Ramana and P Vijaya, others present to greet her included Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mohd Mahmood Ali, and a few ministers from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments.

School children too crowded the streets and the stadium, where she was given a rousing welcome.

Sindhu and Gopichand travelled in a decorated open-deck bus from the airport to the jam-packed Gachhibowli Stadium in Hyderabad, and then did a victory lap in a jeep.

"Thank you all for the blessings, I thank my parents for supporting and motivating me and I thank the government, it made my day," Sindhu said to the cheering crowd at the stadium, reported media.

According to NDTV, the Telangana government will give Sindhu a cash reward of rupees 5 crore and a residential plot in Hyderabad and have offered her a job while the Andhra Pradesh government has offered her a job and will give her a cash reward of rupees 3 crore and a residential plot in Amaravati, the new capital city it is building.

President of India's badminton association,V Chamundeswarnath, will present a BMW car to Sindhu, which will be handed over to her by cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar, later in the week.
