15 players to receive Arjuna Awards

New Delhi, Aug 21 (IBNS) As many as 15 sportspersons, including cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, have been selected for the Arjuna Awards, the Sports Ministry said on Thursday.

Apart from the Indian all-rounder, Abhishek Verma (Archery), Tintu Luka (Athletics), H.N. Girisha (Para Athletics), V. Diju (Badminton), Geetu Anna Jose (Basketball),  Jai Bhagwan (Boxing), Anirban Lahiri (Golf), Mamta Pujari (Kabaddi), Saji Thomas (Rowing), Heena Sidhu (Shooting), Anaka Alankamony (Squash), Tom Joseph (Volleyball),  Renu Bala Chanu (Weightlifting) and Sunil Kumar Rana (Weightlifting) have been selected for the award. Arjuna Award is given for consistently outstanding performance for four years preceding the year of award.

Mahabir Prasad,  N. Lingappa, G. Manoharan, Gurcharan Singh Gogi and Jose Jacob will receive the Dronacharya Awards.

Moreover, the Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime contribution to sports development will be  conferred to Gurmail Singh (Hockey), K.P. Thakkar (Swimming) and  Zeeshan Ali (Tennis).

No sportsperson has been recommended for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2014.

The awardees will receive their awards from the President of India at a specially organized function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Aug 29.

Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand Awardees will receive statuettes, citations and cash prize of Rs.5 lakh each. 

Recipients of Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar will be given trophies.

National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports.
