12th South Asian games : India tops with 27 golds

Guwahati, Feb 7 (IBNS) : India continued to dominate in the 12th South Asian Games (SAG) in third day of the event with 27 gold medals and secured top position in medals tally followed by Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

India won 27 gold, 12 siver, 3 bronze medals while Sri Lanka won 8 gold, 17 silver, 12 bronze and Pakistan athletes bagged 2 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals.

Bangladesh secured fourth position with 2 gold, 2 silver, 13 bronze while Nepal won 3 silver, 5 bronze and Afghanistan bagged 1 silver, 3 bronze medals in the 11 days long multi-sporting event held in Guwahati and Shillong.

Indian wrestlers continued with their brilliant performance in the mega sporting event with 9 gold while swimmers of the host country bagged 8 gold and weightlifters grabbed 6 gold medals.

Indian women brought laurels for the country.

Cyclist Lidiyamol Sunny Menamparambil won gold medal in the women’s 40 KM Criterium Race (Cycling) event while Manorama Devi Tongbram got the silver medal.

  In Weightlifting, Indian lifters continued to reign with Sambo Lapung winning gold in Men’s 69 Kg event and Saraswati Rout bagging gold medal in the women’s 58 Kg event.

  Sri Lanka continued with their brilliant performance in the Games with gold in Cycling and Weightlifting.

On the other hand, Sri Lankan swimmers had so far bagged 5 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals.

Sri Lankan swimmer Matthew Abeyshinge alone won four gold medals in various swimming events.

In Wushu, Taolu Changquan female, Y Sapna Devi of India won gold while Susmita Tamang of Nepal bagged the silver and Nazia Parvez of Pakistan won bronze medal.

In Men's category, PLH Lakshan of Sri Lanka won gold, Bijay Sinjali of Nepal bagged silver and Anjul Namdeo of India won bronze medal.

In women's hockey, India defeated Nepal by 24-0 goals.


For India, Barla and Yendala scored 4 goals each, while Rani, Kaur, Neha and Deepika scored 3 goals each.
