Seema Biswas says Bandit Queen was 20 years ahead of time

"I often travel with my group and I feel the live excitement while performing on stage. But it is difficult to economically sustain members in a theatre troupe," Seema, an NSD  graduate tellls IBNS on the sidelines of a performance of 'Beyond Borders' here.Still from Cooking With Stella

"Unlike TV and films, theatre does not offer that kind of money. The encouragement is lesser for theatre artistes everywhere except Kolkata," Seema says.
  
"I would love to stay here, in Kolkata, to stage my play if I am allowed to stage 1000 shows." she says.
   
"But as I am seated among the audiences here I feel frustrated. Acting on stage is my first love, I love to perform before good and appreciative audiences not sit on the sidelines," she says.
   
Seema whose second film 'Bandit Queen' had created ripples in 1994, says "Now I have three films but I can not disclose the names." Still from Bandit Queen
   
After 'Bandit Queen', 'Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa' (1998), 'were among her landmark works and Seema rates 'Somu's Mother' as one of her closest roles.

"You should ask the directors why they are not offering me those kind of roles any more," she retorts to a question on being seen in lesser number of such films.
   
"Since 'Bandit Queen' films like 'Black Friday and Pink had also been made. But Bandit Queen was 20 years ahead of its time," she says.
   
Seema came to the city last week to interact with a group of women motivators who had engineered social reforms and changes at an initiative of Kutchina Foundation.
