PM mourns Deven Verma's death

New Delhi/Pune, Dec 2 (IBNS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday mourned the death of Bollywood actor Deven Verma in Pune.

"Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has expressed grief on the passing away of noted actor Shri Deven Verma," the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement.

"The Prime Minister described him as a popular actor, admired by film lovers," it said.

The actor died of heart attack and kidney failure at around 2 pm, said reports.

He was 77.

Born in 1937, Deven Varma has been acting  since the 1960s and was popular for his light hearted roles in films of Basu Chatterjee and late Hrishikesh Mukherjee. He had also worked with filmmakers like Gulzar.

Married to the daughter of late Bollywood legend Ashok Kumar's daughter Rupa Ganguly, Verma himself had also produced and directed some films including Besharam. He had won Filmfare Best Comedian Award for Chori Mera Kaam, Chor Ke Ghar Chor and Angoor.

Verma had grown up in Pune and studied at the Nowrosjee Wadia College for Arts and Science (University of Pune) (1953–57), graduating with Honours in Politics and Sociology.

He had acted also in Marathi and Bhojpuri films.

In many films Verma shared screen space with Bollywood big time actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and later with stars like Aamir Khan.
