Leading band singer now makes short film on Gen Next transgender relations

Kolkata, Aug 13 (IBNS) Cactus frontman Sidhu now turned director with a fictional short film Habab, a tale on transgender relationships.

Sidhu, who harbours the wish to make a full length feature film on music band scenario in Kolkata some day, tells IBNS he will screen the the 25-minute short film in the upcoming Kolkata Short Films Festival.

Drawing parallels with creating imageries through lyrics and music in songs like Pakshiraj where he had dwelt on the issue, Sidhu said in films there is more scope to shift to the realism mode from fantasy mode.

Talking about the story about new age same-sex relationships, Sidhu said after a special screening in state-run arts complex Nandan, "Once I read this story in a magazine I immediately decided on filming it as written word can be more evocative in visual format and having directed few music videos I knew I could."

The film features talented young film-stage personality Aparajita Ghosh of Jodi Love Dile Na Praane and Sada Kalo Abchha and Eso Katha Boli (drama) fame among others.

"However, this could not be stretched beyond 25-30 minute limit as a full-length feature. That was the deciding factor for me to debut in film making as a short film maker. Also it is the producer's call. I am willing to make a full-length musical on the band scenario," he said.

Friend musician and director of much acclaimed Open Tee Bioscope, Anindyo Chatterjee says a lyricist can be a good visual artiste as he works on his imagination.

"Any less familiar face may work wonders for screen magic as  proved in my film and also here, in Sidhu's short," the Chandrabindoo front man said.

Fossils lead singer Rupam Islam, also a rockstar in Bengal, said, "The short film has left a strong mark on viewer's mind as he puts under scanner a very relevant issue."

"I know Sidhu is planning a feature film and my best wishes and support for the cause," Rupam signed off.
