Kriti Sanon gets inked: The story behind 'Mimi' actress' first tattoo

Mumbai/IBNS: A bird on the inner side of her ankle is not just a tattoo or an art for Kriti Sanon, who got inked to create a personal milestone.

The National Award winning actress walked into the Aliens Tattoo Studio in Mumbai to keep a promise to herself.

The bird is a symbol of freedom and liberation for the actress. Above the bird, the radiant Sun implies divine energy, soaring heights, and the light that followed her struggles.

Kriti, now 35, won her maiden and only National Award for playing a surrogate mother in Hindi film Mimi, which was released online during Covid-19 pandemic in 2021.

The idea to get inked started much before, particularly during the filming of Mimi.

"If this film touches people the way it touched me, I will carry it with me forever," Kriti had then promised to herself.

But the pandemic, the film getting an online release had dampened Kriti's hope for a successful reception and her dream she felt was over.

But soon the film garnered positive reviews, love from the audience and eventually the National Award, which she shared with Alia Bhatt for Gangubai Kathiawadi at the 69th National Film Awards.

"What impressed me most was how grounded she is. She wasn’t looking for something flashy or decorative. She wanted a tattoo that meant something, that told her the truth," Sunny Bhanushali, the tattoo artist, recalled.

Sharing a glimpse of her maiden tattoo, Kriti wrote on Instagram, "Never thought i would do this.. But never say never .. Just got INKED.. A promise fulfilled.. A reminder that I can fly higher.. to the sunrise!

"To anyone out there with dreams in their eyes… Take that leap you’re scared of.. It may not be easy, But you’ll find your wings, You’ll find your rhythm, You’ll learn to fly!"

Meanwhile, Kriti has already ventured into production, launching her own banner Butterfly Films that produced Do Patti in the form of its debut project in 2024.

Kriti played a double role in the film that co-starred Kajol and Shaheer Sheikh in the lead.

She has already wrapped up shooting for Aanand L. Rai's Tere Ishk Mein where she will be seen alongside Dhanush.

The actress is currently filming for Homi Adajania's Cocktail 2, which also features Shahid Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna in the primary characters.
