Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, whose voice defined generations of Indian cinema music, has died at the age of 92 in Mumbai.

Her son Anand Bhosle confirmed the news to the media, saying, “She is no more. Her last rites will be held at 4 PM tomorrow at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.”

The veteran singer had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday, April 11.

Her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle had earlier shared on X that she was hospitalised due to “extreme exhaustion and a chest infection.”

PM Modi mourns death

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned her demise in an emotional post remebering the interactions he had with her.

"Deeply saddened by the passing of Asha Bhosle Ji, one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known. Her extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts across the world. Be it her soulful melodies or vibrant compositions, her voice carried timeless brilliance. I’ll always cherish the interactions I’ve had with her.

"My condolences to her family, admirers and music lovers. She will continue to inspire generations and her songs will forever echo in people’s lives," he wrote in a post on X.

An eight-decade musical legacy

Born in 1933, Asha Bhosle began her career at just 10 years old, singing for the 1943 Marathi film Majha Bal.

Over the decades, she became one of India’s most versatile voices, delivering iconic songs such as Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Kajra Mohabbat Wala, and Dil Cheez Kya Hai.

Initially known for light and cabaret-style numbers, she later earned acclaim for her range across ghazals, classical compositions, and playback singing.

Her passing marks the end of an era in Indian music, with tributes expected to pour in from across the film and music industry.
