'I wanted to highlight Rishab Shetty's incredible performance': Ranveer Singh apologises after his 'Kantara' mimicry backfires

Mumbai/IBNS: Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has issued an apology after his mimicry of Rishab Shetty’s performance in the blockbuster Kantara: Chapter 1 triggered outrage online and led to a police complaint.

In an Instagram story, Ranveer clarified that his act was meant as praise for Rishab’s performance in Kantara: Chapter 1.

“My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration,” he wrote.

He added, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”

What happened?

The controversy began during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 last Friday, where Ranveer mimicked Rishab while praising his performance. A video circulating online shows Rishab initially asking Ranveer not to mimic him, but the actor continued with the act.

Ranveer also made a factual error during his remarks, referring to ‘daivas’ as “female ghosts”, when the term actually refers to forest gods.

“Rishab, it was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost (Chamundi daiva) enters your body — that shot was amazing,” he said.

The clip drew sharp criticism from social media users, who called the act “insensitive” and “disrespectful”.

Adding to the controversy, a Hindu organisation has filed a police complaint against the 40-year-old actor, alleging that his comments and mimicry hurt religious sentiments.
