Films centred on family bonding always important to audience: Actor Sujan Mukhopadhyay
Bengali actor Sujan Mukhopadhyay will be playing one of the lead roles in Sudeep Das' Kuler Achaar, which deals with a serious social issue. Ahead of the release on Jul 15, India Blooms correspondent Souvik Ghosh catches up with Mukhopadhayay
Excerpts of the conversation...
Q. Tell us about your character in the film.
A. I haven't played a character like this earlier. He sees society, women in a particular way. When his daughter-in-law refuses to change his marital surname, it almost becomes a shock to him.
My character, who is an orthodox, puritan, egoistic person, fails to accept the stance of his daughter-in-law. He, who will seem apparently villain to the audience, is the representation of a patriarchal society.
Q. So your character is a typical man who believes in the patriarchal society?
A. Yes. Also he is very adamant and gets infuriated at times.
Q. This film raises a pertinent question to society.
A. A film's purpose is to raise questions to society. Kuler Achaar is doing exactly the same thing. All the characters in the film are believable.
Q. The title of the film is also very distinct and significant.
A. This kind of familiar title has been chosen very carefully. It has a dual meaning with no poetic or lyrical connotation. I hope the audience will like the film, which has a lot of likeable aspects.
Q. Do you think films centred on family bonding succeed more?
A. Films centred on families always become important to the audience. Tonic, the films made by Shibu (Shiboprosad Mukherjee) are the biggest examples of it.
Sudeep's (filmmaker Sudeep Das) thought of making a film on such a subject is definitely a new thing. This film hammers on the values which have lost their relevance in modern times.
