Indian PM Narendra Modi on Monday mourned the death of Bollywood veteran Dharmendra and called his demise an 'end of an era'.

In his X post, Modi said Dharmendra was a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played.

"The passing of Dharmendra Ji marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played," he said.

Modi further said: "The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people. Dharmendra Ji was equally admired for his simplicity, humility and warmth. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends and innumerable fans. Om Shanti."

Indian President Droupadi Murmu condoled the death of the actor and wrote on X, " The demise of veteran actor and former Member of Parliament Shri Dharmendra Ji is a great loss to Indian cinema. One of the most popular actors, he delivered numerous memorable performances during his decades-long illustrious career. As a towering figure of Indian cinema, he leaves behind a legacy which will continue to inspire young generations of artists. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and admirers."

Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra passed away at his Mumbai home on Monday at the age of 89, marking an end of an era in the Indian film industry.

Dharmendra died 12 days after being discharged from Breach Candy Hospital, where he was admitted for breathlessness. He was due to turn 90 on December 8.

Known fondly as the ‘He-Man of Bollywood,’ Dharmendra had been one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated stars for over six decades, delivering memorable performances in films such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Phool Aur Patthar, and Satyakam.

He was last seen in the romantic sci-fi film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya alongside Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. His upcoming project, Sriram Raghavan’s Ikkis, will feature Agastya Nanda, grandson of Amitabh Bachchan, making his debut. The film is slated for release on December 25, 2025.
