Dev Anand's son Suneil Anand dies at 70 after heart attack in London
Suneil Anand, actor, filmmaker and the only son of Hindi cinema legend Dev Anand and actor Kalpana Kartik, died on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack in London, his family announced. He was 70.
According to a statement issued by his niece Gina Narang, Suneil Anand suffered a heart attack while travelling from the United States to India via the United Kingdom.
Passed away before planned procedure
After falling ill, Suneil Anand was admitted to a hospital in London, where doctors initially planned to perform a stent procedure following an assessment.
However, before the intervention could take place, he suffered a second heart attack.
Despite efforts by the medical team to revive him, he died. In a poignant coincidence, he passed away at the same London hospital where his father, Dev Anand, breathed his last in 2011.
Family seeks privacy
Confirming the news, Gina Narang issued a statement on behalf of the family.
"With heavy hearts, our family mourns the passing of Suneil Anand. We are comforted by the outpouring of love, prayers, and support, for which we are truly grateful. We kindly request privacy as we navigate this difficult time together."
Suneil Anand had celebrated his 70th birthday on June 30.
Career in films
Suneil Anand made his acting debut in 1984 with Anand Aur Anand, directed by his father, Dev Anand.
He later appeared in films including Car Thief, Main Tere Liye and Master.
Beyond acting, he remained closely associated with the family's production house, Navketan Films, helping preserve and promote his father's cinematic legacy.
Dedicated four decades to his father's legacy
Speaking ahead of Dev Anand's birth centenary in 2023, Suneil Anand had reflected on the decades he spent working alongside his father.
"I spent 40 years of my life just being with him, taking care of his well-being, his schedule and Navketan Films," he had said, NDTV reported.
He had also recalled coordinating the screening of the classic Guide at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, describing it as a landmark achievement for Indian cinema.
A dream left unfinished
Remembering Dev Anand as a man of immense knowledge and humility, Suneil Anand had once said his father was equally comfortable speaking to ordinary people and royalty alike.
He had also revealed plans to direct and produce a film dedicated to his father, saying he intended to carry forward Dev Anand's enduring legacy.
That dream now remains unfinished, bringing to a close another chapter in one of Hindi cinema's most celebrated film families.
