Audiences will rush to see both new Bengali releases and theme puja pandals, feels Prosenjt

Kolkata, Oct 10 (IBNS) Happy over the audience response to his latest released movie Zulfiqar, where he essayed the title role of a betrayed patriarch on the lines of Julius Caesar, Bengal film icon Prosenjit Chatterjee says he believes audiences flock to see content-rich Bengali films during a festival like Durga Puja as much as they flock to theme-puja pandals.

"I don't believe box office returns of films released during pujas can be affected as audiences will opt for pandal hopping. Last year, five films were released and all did well at the box office. In past films like Baishe Srabon and Mishawr Rawhosyo, starring me, had done remarkably well and both were Puja releases," Prosenjit told IBNS at the star-studded premier of Zulfiqar last Thursday.

"If the content of the films are good, catering to different audiences, they will yield good returns. After all, can we forget the golden era when Bengali commercial theatres scheduled the stage plays during five days of Durga Puja starring from Sasthi? That phase seems to have come in Bengali cinema now," Prosenjit said.

Coming to his looks in Zulfiqar, Prosenjit acknowledged there is a buzz about that look.

"Yes that look in Zulfiqar is being talked about. But for that matter my different looks in past 10 different films have all become topics of discussion. In this year itself from Ujan in Praktan, to Nirbed Lahiri in Khwato, to a matinee idol in serial Mahanayak and the most recent one in Zulfiqar, tell me which look had not been discussed and debated?," the actor said.

"If you go a little back, name any other film starring me, and you will yourself see how my looks have been experimented and that helps me to grasp the complexities of character," he said.

"In Zulfiqar, we had serious discussions over each and every jewellery worn by me finally before the camera to impart authenticity and aura to the character," he said.

Coming back to Srijit's film, Prosenjit said, "Debuting with an Autograph and then shifting to a darker issue in Baishe Srabon and then again Hemlock Society, Srijit has not confined himself within a certain space and stepped out from one zone to another."

Recalling the shooting experience of Zulfiqar, Prosenjit said, "After enacting each scene which were emotional from deep within, we used to hug each other."

Zulfiqar, produced by Sri Venkatesh Films, was released this puja.
