The White House reaffirmed India’s status as a vibrant democracy, countering concerns about the state of democracy in the country. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming state visit to the United States, the discussion on the strength and health of democratic institutions is expected to take center stage.

During a news conference in Washington, John Kirby, the coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council, expressed confidence in India’s democratic foundations. “India is a vibrant democracy… Certainly, I would expect the strength and health of democratic institutions will be part of the discussion,” he stated. The White House is eager to engage in open conversations and address any concerns with India, as true friends do.

The visit aims to strengthen the partnership and friendship between the two nations, with a focus on advancing mutual interests. Kirby highlighted the multifaceted collaboration between India and the US, including defense cooperation and robust economic trade. He emphasized India’s role as a member of the Pacific Quad and a key friend and partner in Indo-Pacific security.

India’s significance extends beyond bilateral relations, with implications for global cooperation. Kirby underlined that President Joe Biden eagerly anticipates discussing a wide range of issues with PM Modi, further deepening the partnership and friendship between the two countries.

As the world awaits PM Modi’s address to the US Congress, the stage is set for reinforcing the importance of democratic values and consolidating the strategic ties between India and the United States. This state visit holds immense potential for fostering a stronger partnership that transcends borders and bolsters shared interests.
