Kolkata/IBNS: The West Bengal government on Wednesday deputed 10 IPS officers to assist the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Calcutta High Court to probe the alleged incidents of murder and sexual assault since the declaration of Bengal assembly poll results on May 2, officials said on Thursday.

The development came a day after the High Court observed that the three-member SIT, comprising IPS officers Soumen Mitra, Suman Bala Sahoo and Ranbir Kumar, was not functioning properly as per the instructions of the state's apex court.

According to the officials in the state's home department, of the10 IPS officers appointed to assist the SIT, two officials will be deputed each to five zones- Headquarters, North, South, West and Kolkata Police Zones.

"Ten IPS officers— DIG Railways, West Bengal, Soma Das Mitra, DC (RS) Kolkata Subhankar Bhattacharya, IGP North Bengal D.P. Singh, DIG Malda Range Praveen Kumar Tripathi, ADG Western Zone Sanjoy Singh, IGP Bardhaman Range B.L. Meena, ADG South Bengal Siddh Nath Gupta, DIG Barasat Range Prasun Bandyopadhyay, Addn. CP-III Kolkata Tanmoy Roy Chaudhury, and Jt. CP Kolkata Police Nilanjan Biswas— will assist the SIT in addition to their normal duties," a senior police official said.

Earlier on Aug 19, a five-judge larger bench of the Calcutta HC ordered a CBI investigation into the cases of post-poll violence, including murder, rape, and crime against women, and also directed a court-monitored SIT probe into other allegations.

The state government on Wednesday (Sept 1) moved the Supreme Court challenging Calcutta HC's order directing the CBI probe.
