West Bengal Congress chief Somen Mitra dies at 78
Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Congress Chief Somen Mitra died at a private hospital in south Kolkata, where he was undergoing treatment, on Thursday. He was 78.
The former Parliamentarian was suffering from kidney issues and died of cardiac arrest at 1:50 AM on Thursday.
Confirming the news and expressing grief, the West Bengal unit of Congress tweeted: "WBPCC President Somen Mitra has breathed his last, a short while ago. As we struggle to come to terms with this immense loss, all our prayers and thoughts are with Dada’s family. May his soul rest in peace."

Mitra had tested negative for COVID-19.
During his long political career, he represented the Diamond Harbour constituency at the Lok Sabha in 2009 as a Trinamool Congress candidate.
He was a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Sealdah during 1972–2006.
He was the president of the state unit of the Indian National Congress. In July 2008, he left the Indian National Congress and formed a new party, named Pragatisheel Indira Congress.
He rejoined his parent party Congress in January 2014 and before that he resigned from his MP post.
Replacing Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Somen Mitra became the West Bengal Congress President in 2018.
