West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee describes Narendra Modi's tenure as 'Super Emergency', Prakash Javadekar hits back

Kolkata, June 25 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said the country is passing through 'super emergency' during his tenure.

In a veiled attack on Modi, Banerjee tweeted: "Today is the anniversary of the #Emergency declared in 1975. For the last five years, the country went through a ‘Super Emergency’. We must learn our lessons from history and fight to safeguard the democratic institutions in the country."

Modi became the PM for the first time in 2014 when his Bharatiya Janata Party clinched the Lok Sabha Polls to end the Congress-led UPA government's regime of 10 years.

BJP once again scripted a massive victory in the general polls this year.

Modi took oath as the PM for the second term recently.

The BJP and Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress are engaged in a tough political battle in West Bengal for the past couple of months.

In the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP registered a strong result this time in the state as it won 18 seats.

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar was quick in giving a strong response to Mamata Banerjee for her tweet and said the CM is running the state of West Bengal like an 'emergency' period.

June 25 is a significant date in the history of the nation as it was on this day that ex-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had declared a state of Emergency in the country for a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977.

Tuesday marked the  44th anniversary of the 1975 Emergency.
