Kolkata/IBNS: Indian athlete Pinki Pramanik, who is from West Bengal's Purulia district, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here on Thursday.

Pramanik joined the BJP in presence of West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh.

The athlete's joining is significant as the eastern state is heading to the assembly polls in 2021 with the BJP eyeing a chance to assume power.

Pramanik had won silver at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, gold at the 2005 Asian Indoor Games and 2006 Asian Games.

The BJP, which has won 18 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, is looking to unseat Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
