We are not bonded labours: Mamata Banerjee hits out at BJP over CAA-NRC
Kolkata/IBNS: Maintaining her firm stand against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying no one was the ruling party's "bonded labour".
Addressing the leaders of her party Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s students' wing Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), Banerjee also urged the students to hit the streets to make people understand why the CAA and NRC are not favourable in a much similar manner in which the BJP is functioning in the state.
"If you go to the streets or tea stalls or restaurants, you will have to make people understand (why CAA, NRC are not favourable). We are not bonded labours. We are the people of India," said the TMC supremo at the Netaji Indoor Stadium here.
Also Banerjee asked the students to hold a door-to-door campaign against the CAA and NRC at a time the BJP is undertaking a similar campaign in favour of the new contentious citizenship law which aims to grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Parsi, Jain but not Muslim refugees who came to India from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh before 2015.
Agreeing to the demands of West Bengal's opposition parties, Congress and Left, the TMC government on Monday will pass an anti-CAA resolution in the state assembly making West Bengal the fourth state to take such a step.
Left-ruled Kerala, Congress-ruled Punjab and Rajasthan have already passed resolutions against the CAA in their respective state assemblies.
