Was reminded of 26/11 terror attacks: Uddhav Thackeray on JNU assault
Mumbai/IBNS: Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray has compared the sudden assault on JNU campus with the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
Terming the violent attack by masked goons 'cowardly', Thackeray in a strong-worded message to students in Maharashtra has assured them that his government would not tolerate any move to hurt them.
After yesterday's attack on JNU campus by unidentified assailants, a large number of students across Maharashtra have taken to streets to express their solidarity with JNU students.
Thackeray warned the BJP-led government at the Centre against antagonising students and urged the Delhi Police to take immediate steps against the perpetrators. He warned the Delhi Police that failure to do so would raise questions about a law and order force that was already under scanner for its handling of protests by Jamia Milia students.
"I was watching reports on TV and The attack on JNU students on Sunday night reminded me of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. Students are feeling unsafe in the country...I will not tolerate anything like that happens here in Maharashtra," Uddhav Thackeray said today, reported NDTV.
"Youth are scared and angry. Our youth are not cowards. Don't ignite a bomb by instigating the youth. If Delhi Police fail to find out perpetrators of the attack, then they will also be in the dock," he said.
"We should know who was behind these masks. Those who came wearing masks are cowards. If they had guts they would have come openly. Such cowardice can't be tolerated," he added.
Asked if he agrees with allegations that the attckers belonged to ABVP, the student organisation linked to BJP, Thackeray said he would not like to do politics on the matter. "I don't want to do politics on this. But the masks of the perpetrators must be removed and that will give us a clear picture of who was behind the attack," he said, quoted NDTV.
At least 34 people were injured in the violent incident and underwent treatment at AIIMS.
Police has been criticised for remaining passive while the perpetrators uleashed violence on the JNU campus on Sunday evening, NDTV reported.
