Ferozabad/UNI: At least 14 people died and 35 injured as a private sleeper double-decker bus collided with a truck on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway last night, police said on Thursday.

Superintendent of Police (rural) Rajesh Kumar said that the accident took place at around 2200 hrs on Wednesday night near milestone 71 under Nagla Khangar Police Station area of Firozabad.

"The sleeper bus, carrying around 60 passengers, was going from Delhi to Motihari (Bihar). The double-decker bus hit the container truck from behind," he added.

"Injured patients have been sent to Saifai in Etawah for treatment," a senior police official said.

ADG Anand said that the death toll could increase as the front side of the bus was totally damaged. "While 10 died on the spot, 4 others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital," he said.

However, according to unofficial sources, the death toll is 16.

The police is yet to identify the deceased passengers, most of who belong from Bihar and eastern UP.

Taking cognisance of the accident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the district magistrate and senior superintendent of police to reach the spot and oversee relief work.

He also issued directives for proper treatment of the injured, a statement issued by the state government in Lucknow said.
