Srinagar, July 27 (UNI): Two militants were killed by security forces in a fierce encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Shopian, official sources said on Saturday.

The internet service has been suspended as a precautionary measure to prevent rumours in Shopian, where reports of clashes from some areas were reported.

They said acting on a tip-off about the presence of militants troops of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police, Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and CRPF launched a CASO at Bonbazar in main town Shopian late on Friday night.

All the exit points were sealed and house to house searches launched, they said.

They said when the security forces were moving towards a particular house, militants hiding inside opened fire with automatic weapons.

Security forces also retaliated ensuing an encounter in which so far two militants were killed. The operation was still going on when the reports last came in.

Meanwhile, additional security forces and state police personnel have been deployed in the entire main town to prevent demonstrations.
