Kolkata, July 26 (IBNS): Kolkata Police arrested Puja Singh, the lady private tutor accused of mercilessly beating up a three and a half-year-old, on Friday night. She would be produced in a city court Saturday.

Tracking tower location of her cell phone, the sleuths of Lake Town police station arrested Puja from Rashbihari area in southern parts of Kolkata. She was taking shelter at one of her relatives’ place there.

It was learnt the accused had also contacted her family members and spoke to her brother at Samastipur in Bihar, after footage of the incident was aired on Wednesday, police said.

It showed Puja brutally beating up a three and half-year-old child inside a locked room.

She was seen hitting the child repeatedly in the footage which was captured by security cameras installed at the apartment.

The accused tutor was on the run since Wednesday afternoon following the incident that took place at Lake Town area in Kolkata. Puja’s husband is still absconding, police said.

“We welcome the prompt action of the police as they could arrest the accused on the third day after the incident was televised. The police will now take action against her. In fact, all people who saw the video footage of the incident want the tutor to be punished for her condemnable act,” West Bengal woman and child welfare minister Shashi Panja said.

In a separate incident, a class eight student of a private school in Kolkata’s twin Howrah district was allegedly beaten with iron chains by his teacher for talking in class on Thursday.

The teacher was arrested after the student’s father lodged an FIR with the police, sources said.
