Trump promises “greatest arch ever” in Washington DC, shares image of this iconic Indian structure on Truth Social
US President Donald Trump on Monday shared an image of New Delhi’s iconic India Gate — a British-era war memorial — on his Truth Social platform, as he moves ahead with plans to construct what he calls the world’s “greatest” triumphal arch in Washington, DC.
Posting the photograph of the Indian monument, Trump wrote: “India’s beautiful triumphal arch, ours will be greatest of all.”
The proposed structure, tentatively called the “Independence Arch,” is intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Trump’s monument plan
According to The Washington Post, Trump has become particularly enthusiastic about constructing a 250-foot-tall arch overlooking the Potomac River.
Citing two people familiar with the discussions, the newspaper reported that the monument would be built to Trump’s specifications.
The proposed site lies between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. If completed as envisioned, the structure would dramatically alter the landscape, potentially reshaping the visual relationship between the two historic landmarks and affecting pedestrian sightlines in the area, the report added.
Speaking earlier to POLITICO, Trump said construction could begin within the next two months.
“It hasn’t started yet. It starts sometime in the next two months. It’ll be great. Everyone loves it,” Trump told the publication.
He said, “They love the ballroom too. But they love the Triumphal Arch.”
According to POLITICO, the structure is expected to be loosely modelled on European victory monuments.

India Gate
Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, India Gate stands 42 metres tall in the heart of New Delhi. The memorial commemorates more than 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives during World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War.
As noted on the Incredible India website, the monument remains a poignant symbol of sacrifice and national remembrance, and is one of the country’s most recognisable landmarks.
