Train derails in Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border, 10 killed
Bengaluru, Feb 13 (IBNS): At least 10 people were killed and more than 60 people were injured as nine coaches of an express train bound for Ernakulam from Hosur in Bengaluru derailed at a place near Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border on Friday, reports said.
The Bangalore-Ernakulam Intercity express derailed at Anekal-Hosur, which is about 45 km from Bengaluru.
The train had left Bengaluru at 6.15 am and it got derailed at 7.35 am.
Following the incident, railway authorities have rushed rescue teams to the spot and have initiated a massive operation.
Several passengers are feared trapped in the coaches that mangled due to the impact of derailment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the loss of lives due to derailing of Bangalore-Ernakulam express.
"Saddened by the loss of lives due to derailing of Bangalore-Ernakulam express. Condolences to the families of the deceased. I wish the injured a speedy recovery. Railway Minister and officials are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring timely relief, ” the Prime Minister said.
Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said that accident happened as boulder fell on track.
"Unfortunate rail accident in Karnataka,Boulder fell on track in Ghat section, train hit it. directed all sr officers to rush with full help" he tweeted.
He informed that his colleague Sadanand Gowda has rushed to accident site while he is on his way to Bengaluru.
"I am personally monitoring it and in touch with State and local administration.All Sr rail officials are directed by me to be on job. Directed Chair Rail Board to evacuate all stranded passengers. Medical help rushed," he posted.
While condoling the loss of lives, Prabhu said he has directed to provide best possible medical care to the injured.
The Railway Minister has also assured of compensations to the victims and the kin of the deceased.
"Chairman rail board. chief medical DG, members rail board ordered to rush to site.Exgratia to be given ASAP. Accident relief medical van on," he tweeted.
He has also ordered enquiry to fix responsibility and for corrective action to prevent such unfortunate accidents.
"Monitoring action regularly. All possible help will be rendered to families affected," added he.
