Top Delhi BJP leaders meet Amit Shah after controversial demolition halts on Supreme Court order

The meeting lasted for an hour and those who attended included Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta, MP Ramesh Bidhuri, MLA Ram Bir Bidhuri and leader Maninder Singh Sirsa.

The leaders, however, didn't disclose anything to the media about the meeting. "It was a routine meeting," said Sirsa.

Nine bulldozers were pressed into action by the BJP-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) in Jahangirpuri around 10 in the morning to remove illegal construction.

However, the Supreme Court ordered a halt to the demolition in the area where communal violence had erupted earlier, ordering the municipal authorities to maintain the status quo.

"Maintain status quo, list the matter before the appropriate bench tomorrow," CJI Ramana said after hearing a petition by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and others.

The civic officials in Jahangirpuri, however, insisted that they have not received a copy of the order and proceeded to bulldoze not only several shops but also the gates and the wall of a mosque which was at the centre of the controversy during Saturday's clash.

After a two-hour stand-off, CPM leader Brinda Karat was seen blocking a bulldozer and waving the copy of the court order.

The petitioner said the use of bulldozers following communal clashes targetting one community was disturbing.
