TN CM announces new scheme to allow senior citizens free bus rides

Chennai, Feb 18 (IBNS) Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa announced a free bus riding scheme for senior citizens on Thursday.

The scheme will enable old people to avail non-air conditioned bus for a maximum of ten times in a month free of cost, reports said.

TOI quoted Jayalalithaa as saying, "On the eve of 2011 assembly election, we announced several promises in the party manifesto. We also announced that free bus passes would be given to senior citizens and with today's announcement, we have fulfilled all the promises made in the manifesto and I announce this with pride."

The new scheme will come into effect from Feb 24, her birthday.

"Monthly 10 tokens will be issued to senior citizens. The elderly need to get an identity card from the MTC (Metropolitan Transport Corporation) depots by filling in applications with photograph," she added.

No deadline have been fixed for the deposit of applications, the CM said.

Jayalalithaa said, "There is no last date for submission of applications and whoever needs it can apply at any time. Apart from fulfilling the promises made in the manifesto we have introduced more number of welfare schemes."
