Three army men, militant killed in Kashmir LoC encounter

Srinagar, May 25 (IBNS) Three army personnel and a militant were killed and an officer sustained serious bullet injuries in a fierce gunfight on the Line of Control in Tangdhar sector of Kashmir on Monday.

According to an official, a group of four to seven infiltrators 'probably' sneaked into the Indian side on Sunday night near Darshan Post along the LoC opposite to Pakistan's Chhajula Post.

The group of infiltrators were intercepted by the Army’s 3/1 GR in the dense forest area.

The group of infiltrators after being challenged, started indiscriminate firing with weapons upon the forces.

The army retaliated which resulted in a fierce gunfight, an official said.

The incident occurred just hours after a staff member of the government-run telecom operator BSNL was killed and two more were injured when militants opened fire at the company's office in north Kashmir's Sopore district, about 50km from Srinagar.

In another encounter on the same day, a militant and a soldier were killed in Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

In the initial gunfight, four army men, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) Subedar BB Thapa, sustained serious bullet injuries.

Defense spokesman in Srinagar said that in exchange of gunfight four army men including an officer sustained injuries.

He said, ”We lost three men in the operation.”

"In a heavy exchange of fire, the group was defeated and they retreated after leaving behind one dead militant from whom one AK-47, one pistol...were recovered,'' said the spokesman,  adding that the operation is still in progress.
