Syed Geelani applies for Indian passport, issue sparks row

| | May 21, 2015, at 10:19 pm
New Delhi, May 21 (IBNS): Amid a row over separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani's application for an Indian passport, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said passport is the right of every Indian citizen.

"Passport is the right of every Indian citizen and is issued by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) after following due process. As and when the matter is referred to MHA we will proceed on merit," the MHA was quoted as saying in media reports.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is an ally of PDP in the Jammu and Kashmir government, is also against the issuing of the passport.

However, Geelani is yet to complete his application.

The separatist leader reportedly wants the passport as he wants to visit his ailing daughter in Saudi Arabia.
