Suspended Bengal BDO on the run arrested after drunk-driving crash
Suspended Rajganj Block Development Officer (BDO) Prasanta Barman, an accused in the kidnapping and murder case of Salt Lake gold trader Swapan Kamaliya, was detained on Monday in New Town in connection with a drink-and-drive incident, media reports said.
According to sources cited by Anandabazar Patrika, Barman allegedly struck a pedestrian while driving in the Eco Park police station area of New Town. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.
Reports said Barman had been absconding since January. In the viral footage, he is seen appearing visibly intoxicated at the scene of the accident. The injured biker was left bleeding following the collision and was later rescued by police and taken to a hospital.
The video also shows Barman engaging in an altercation with local residents. At one point, he is seen stepping out of his vehicle with unsteady movements and reportedly telling police, “arrest me,” according to media reports.
Police subsequently detained the suspended BDO.
Barman was already under scrutiny in the high-profile kidnapping and murder case linked to gold trader Swapan Kamaliya.
According to media reports, Kamaliya’s body was recovered from a canal bank in New Town’s Jatragachhi area last year.
Police had earlier alleged that he was abducted and murdered, Dainik Bhaskar reported.
