Sonia Gandhi not keen to take charge of Congress
New Delhi, July 11 (IBNS): Despite urge from several quarters of the party, senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi is not keen to take charge of the outfit after her son Rahul Gandhi stepped down from the topmost position, an NDTV report said.
Sonia, who was the Congress chief for the longest time, has so far said no to become the interim Congress chief. Rahul last month resigned as the Congress president taking responsibility of the party's abysmal performance in the Lok Sabha polls.
Sonia remained the Congress president between 1998 and 2017. The veteran said she is not able to take charge of the party right now, even as an interim president.
After Rahul stepped down despite several Congress leaders' insistence, veteran leader Motilal Vora became the interim Congress president.
Following the resignation, various Congress leaders including Jyotiraditya Scindia, Milind Deora, Somen Mitra stepped down from their respective posts in the party.
In a recent development, several Congress MLAs have pulled their support to the Karnataka government. The Congress faced a similar situation in Goa too as several party legislators of the state have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The country's oldest outfit also suffered defections in Telangana as well.
In the Lok Sabha polls, the Congress won just 52 seats failing to get the Opposition Party's tag in the parliament. It is one of the worst performance by the outfit since Independence.
