Six labourers suspected to be trapped in a coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills
Guwahati: At least six labourers from Assam are suspected to be trapped in a coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district.
According to the reports, the incident took place near Umpleng in East Jaintia Hills district.
Meghalaya DGP R Chandranathan said the coal mine has been identified at Sutunga interior under Umplemg AD camp and search operations are on.
According to the reports, a person named Karimul Bari had informed the Cachar district police that, at least 5-7 labourers of Assam, one my neighbor working in died in coal mine accident in Meghalaya two days ago.
The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Cachar district had immediately informed East Jaintia Hills district police about the incident.
The Meghalaya DGP further said that, the SP of East Jaintia Hills district and IGP (Law & Order) are now at the suspected spot.
In January this year, six coal miners died in an accident inside a coal mine near Rymbai area in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills.
Earlier in 2018, at least 15 labourers were trapped inside an illegal coal mine in East Jaintia Hills and following the incident the court had banned coal mining activities in the state.
