Shiv Sena will contest West Bengal Assembly polls, tweets Sanjay Raut

Kolkata/IBNS: The Shiv Sena will contest the West Bengal assembly elections due later this year, senior party leader Sanjay Raut announced on Sunday, adding a fresh angle into the high pitched fight between Mamata Banerjee's TMC and a rising BJP.

"So, here is the much-awaited update. After discussions with Party Chief Shri Uddhav Thackeray, Shivsena has decided to contest the West Bengal Assembly Elections. We are reaching Kolkata soon," tweet Raut, a Rajya Sabha MP and the party's top spokesperson.

The West Bengal elections are being closely watched with the BJP injecting vast resources to grab the majority seats in the 294 member assembly. After making inroads into West Bengal in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has made Bengal its top priority.

The Shiv Sena has often sided with Mamata Banerjee to nettle its friend-turned-foe BJP but lashed out at the TMC chief for pro-minority stance.

The Shiv Sena's ally in Maharashtra, Congress, is contesting the elections in Bengal in alliance with CPI (M)-led left front, which had been in power for over three decades.
