SC cancels suspension of Salman's conviction

New Delhi, Jan 14 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled the suspension of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s conviction in a 1998 poaching case.

The actor was convicted in 2007 for hunting and killing two endangered chinkara deer and a blackbuck while shooting for a film in Rajasthan in 1998. He spent time in a Jodhpur jail twice as he was sentenced to five years in jail and is currently out on bail in the case.

The Rajasthan High Court suspended the conviction in 2013 to make it easier for the actor to travel to the UK to shoot for a film. Khan’s visa had lapsed and under British immigration rules.

As per guidelines a person convicted and sentenced to more than a four-year term in prison is not eligible for a visa in the UK.

The Apex court reversed it which means the actor cannot travel to the UK. The Rajasthan High Court’s suspension order was also challenged by the Rajasthan government.
