Saradha scam: Amit Mitra slams ED probe

| | Apr 21, 2014, at 03:01 pm
Kolkata, Apr 21 (IBNS) West Bengal Finance Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Amit Mitra has alleged that there is political conspiracy behind the Enforcement Directorate (ED)'s probe into the Saradha chit fund scam.

"The ED starts its probe into the Saradha case just two days before the elections in Bengal. What does it mean? Political motivation behind this move is clear," said Mitra.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday attacked the West Bengal government and said it is saving those in the Saradha Group ponzi scam which hit the state last year.

"Big scams have hit West Bengal. You all have heard about Saradha scam. The government here has not done anything in the past two years. 20 lakh people have been affected by it. The SEBI and the Enforcement Directorate had told them to take action but the Mamata Banerjee-led government did not take any action," Gandhi said while addressing a rally in  in Malda district.

"However, they say they are the government of the people. They are trying to save them (those involved in the scam),” he said.

The Saradha Group that went bust last year left lakhs of depositors in a fix.

Saradha Group Chairman and Managing Director Sudipta Sen is currently in jail.

Sen's wife Piyali Sen and his son Shubhojit were arrested by the ED in Kolkata this week.
