Samrat Choudhary set to become Bihar’s first BJP Chief Minister as Nitish Kumar era ends

Patna/IBNS: Samrat Choudhary is set to become the next Chief Minister of Bihar, marking a major political transition after Nitish Kumar ended his long tenure in office.

With this development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will secure its first Chief Minister in the state, shifting the political landscape in Bihar where it had long remained a junior alliance partner.

Leadership transition following Nitish Kumar’s exit

Nitish Kumar, one of Bihar’s longest-serving leaders, resigned earlier in the day and stated that the incoming government would take charge of the state’s administration with his support and guidance.

Soon after the announcement, Choudhary expressed gratitude to the BJP leadership, describing the role as an opportunity to serve the people and fulfil public expectations.

Oath ceremony soon

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan confirmed that Choudhary was unanimously elected as the BJP legislature party leader.

The decision followed internal consultations overseen by the party’s central leadership.

Sources indicated that the swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place soon, with Narendra Modi expected to attend the event.

BJP expands footprint in Hindi heartland

The development brings Bihar in line with several other states across northern India where the BJP already holds power, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Haryana.

Bihar had remained a key exception until now, despite the BJP being part of the ruling alliance for nearly two decades, apart from brief interruptions.

Who is Samrat Choudhary

Samrat Choudhary, 57, who currently serves as Deputy Chief Minister, belongs to the Koeri or Kushwaha community, a significant Other Backwards Class group in Bihar.

The community holds considerable political influence, second only to the Yadavs among backward caste groups in the state.

Sources suggested that representation from this community played a role in leadership considerations during alliance discussions.

Choudhary began his political career in 1990 and has been associated with multiple parties over the years, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Janata Dal (United), before joining the BJP in 2017.

He had emerged as a leading contender for the top post in recent months, with indications from Nitish Kumar during public engagements signalling support for his leadership.

Political balance in Bihar

In the 243-member Bihar Assembly, Nitish Kumar’s party holds 85 seats, closely trailing the BJP’s strength, reinforcing the latter’s position in the current political arrangement.

The leadership shift marks a significant moment in Bihar’s political trajectory, with the BJP now directly heading the state government.
