He also appreciated the contribution of former Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian to the bilateral partnership and wished him all the best for the future.

In a tweet, he said: “Congratulate @AmbColonna on your appointment as Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs of France. Look forward to working with you. “Appreciate the contribution that my friend @JY_LeDrian made to our partnership. Best wishes for the future.”

Catherine Colonna, France's ambassador to Britain and former spokesperson for President Jacques Chirac, was named foreign minister on Friday.

Colonna, 66, a seasoned diplomat has held posts in Washington and Brussels.

She is former ambassador to Italy and a former secretary of state for European affairs.

Colonna is best known as the late Chirac's spokeswoman, a job she held for nine years. She replaces Jean-Yves Le Drian, who had been a minister -- first at the defence ministry and then foreign ministry for 10 years.

She will work closely with former centre-right lawmaker Sebastien Lecornu, a close ally of Emmanuel Macron, who takes over as defeence minister.
