Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrives in Delhi, to hold talks with PM Modi tomorrow

New Delhi/IBNS: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is on a two-day India visit amid Moscow's attack on neighbouring Ukraine, landed in Delhi on Thursday evening.

He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday.

The visit has attracted global attention as it would be the highest-level representation from Moscow since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Lavrov's visit also coincides with British foreign minister Liz Truss's visit and follows Chinese minister Wang Yi's trip to New Delhi last week, the first in over two years.

In fact, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss was set to hold talks with S Jaishankar with a focus on “Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine”.

This is the Russian Foreign Minister's third visit overseas since Russia's Feb 24 invasion of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the U.S. and Australia have criticized India for considering a Russian proposal that would undermine sanctions imposed by America and its allies amid Lavrov's visit to Delhi for talks.

"Now is the time to stand on the right side of history, and to stand with the United States and dozens of other countries, standing up for freedom, democracy and sovereignty with the Ukrainian people, and not funding and fueling and aiding President Putin's war," Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told reporters in Washington on Wednesday.

She called reports of the arrangement "deeply disappointing," while adding that she hadn't seen details.
