New Delhi, Nov 29 (IBNS): In a daring heist, two armed robbers shot dead a security guard and looted nearly Rs. 1.5 crore from an ATM cash van in north Delhi on Saturday, media reports said.

It has been learnt that the incident took place at Bungalow Road in busy Kamla Nagar market area near Delhi's North Campus around 11 am, when two men on a bike shot the guard when the van had stopped to load cash at an private bank's ATM.

The robbery was carried out while the van was parked in front of a local ATM.

According to reports, the custodians of the cash van were in the process of refilling the ATM machine, while the guard was providing them security cover.

In the meantime, two men on a motorcycle arrived and shot the security guard twice in his head.

They then picked up a bag containing Rs. 1.5 crore from inside the cash van and fled brandishing their weapons.

The other occupants of the cash van, who were also armed, were inside the ATM while the guard was waiting outside.

An eyewitness immediately called the police control room and informed the police about the crime.

A PCR van arrived at the crime scene and rushed the security guard to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.

Sandeep Goel, joint commissioner of police (central range), said the cash van belonged to a private cash replenishment company and it was carrying cash meant to refill different ATM machines in Kamla Nagar and Roop Nagar localities.

Police has started the investigation.

CCTV cameras installed near the crime spot are being scanned to establish the identity of the criminals and find other crucial leads pertaining to the case.

Several teams led by the DCP (north), Madhur Verma -- under the overall supervision of Deepak Mishra, special CP (law and order) -- are probing the cash van robbery case.

A manhunt is on to nab the culprits.

A case of murder, armed robbery and arms act has been registered at the Roop Nagar police station.
