New Delhi, Aug 9 (IBNS): The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which runs the central government, is likely to have an upper hand in the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman election, which will be held on Thursday, media reports said.

In the Rajya Sabha contest, NDA candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh, who is from the Janata Dal (United), will take on Congress' BK Hariprasad.

With the number of parties abstaining from voting, the majority mark in a 245-member Upper House has fallen to 119 from original 123.

The YSR Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said they will not take part in the voting.

The Opposition is likely to have 108 members in support of it with 61 of them from Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

On the other hand, after the confirmation of support from Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik, the NDA took its figure to 123.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally reached out to Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik, seeking the latter's support in the upper house contest, NDTV reported.

The voting in the election for the Deputy Chairman's post will begin at 11 am.
