Rajiv Gandhi's policies shaped modern India: Rahul Gandhi remembers father on his 31st death anniversary

New Delhi/UNI:  Paying homage to his late father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 31st death anniversary, Congress top leader Rahul Gandhi called him a visionary leader, whose policies, he claimed, have helped to shape modern India.

In a tweet, Rahul said, "He was a compassionate and kind man, and a wonderful father to me and Priyanka, who taught us the value of forgiveness and empathy. I dearly miss him and fondly remember the time we spent together."

Rajiv Gandhi served as the sixth Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989, the youngest in the country.

He took office after the assassination of his mother, then prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam LTTE suicide bomber during an election rally in Tamil Nadu's Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991.

Other Congress leaders, including P Chidambaram and Sachin Pilot, also paid their tribute to the former Prime Minister.
