Rahul Gandhi's convoy enroute violence-hit Manipur's Churachandpur stopped

Imphal/IBNS: The convoy of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was on the way to visit the violence-hit Churachandpur in Manipur on Thursday, has been stopped by police, media reports said.

Rahul was visiting Churachandpur, which was hit by ethnic violence.

Around 50,000 people are staying in relief camps across the state since the ethnic violence started in May 2023.

Violence erupted on May 3 after a Tribal Solidarity March was organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for the Scheduled Tribe status.

Sporadic incidents of violence have been reported from parts of Manipur since then. In one such recent incident, Union Minister Rajkumar Ranjan Singh's house was set on fire in Imphal.

Meitis are a majority community of Manipur, followed by tribal communities like the Nagas and Kukis.
