Presidency row: VC forms committee, protesters not ready to accept
Kolkata, Aug 25 (IBNS): Vice-Chancellor of Presidency University Anuradha Lohia on Tuesday formed a committee which will discuss with the protesting students on their demands.
In a press conference here at Presidency University, Anuradha Lohia said, " Protesters' elected union leader told me that they don't wish to discuss with me personally but with a committee that I appoint. The seven-member committee would comprise six heads of departments (HoDs) and the dean of students as member secretary."
"The committee will give me a report after seven days from now about what had been the discussion with them, what they want, what can be done and what can't be done. Grievances of students, their recommendations and also how best we can implement the solutions that they have suggested," she said.
Lohia also said that she would form another committee if needed. "If the students want any further administrative clarification, we will form a committee which will be recommended by this committee. The administrative officials such as the registrar, the controller of exams, finance officers and assistant registrar would be a member," she added.
Anuradha Lohia clearly said again that she would not resign from her post. "Its fair that they don't like me they don't want to speak to me. I will still do the job. The job of the VC is to take it forward," she said.
However, amid criticisms, the protesting students removed all wall-writings and posters from the room of the VC earlier on Monday.
Talking on this matter, Lohia said, "I really appreciate their gesture. I am so proud of these students. They are so young. They don't have the maturity. They don't know what they are doing. And it is our job to teach them. They realize that what they were doing is wrong and I am really grateful to the almighty. Last night I recovered my blood pressure when I heard this."
Meanwhile, the protesting students did not accept the committee.
After their general body (GB)'s meeting, one student, Nilabja Banerjee told IBNS: "We wanted to talk with the registrar, the second man of university's administration, but VC said that we had to talk with the committee which is consisted of 6 HoDs and the dean of the students. None of this people has directly association with the administration. So, we are not accepting this committee. We will organize a convention here in this week to take others' opinions. However, our protest will be continued."
However, the university's situation on Tuesday was completely under control. Few students show protests silently and classes were normal.
