Prashant Kishor's joining Congress almost done deal: Reports

| @indiablooms | Apr 23, 2022, at 03:30 am

New Delhi/IBNS: Election strategist Prashant Kishor, whose last attempt with the Congress failed, is on the verge of joining the party to help it revive its hold in the national politics and to gear up for the 2024 general election, media reports said.

"That he would join the Grand Old Party and play a key role has almost been decided, barring the contours of that role, which will be drawn up by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in consultation with Rahul Gandhi," NDTV reported quoting sources.

The special team formed by Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi to evaluate Kishor's proposal, wants him to dissociate from all other political parties and devote himself entirely to their party, said reports.

Kishor, who had worked with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2014, helped West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the 2021 assembly elections regain her lost grounds and trounce the BJP after the 2019 general election results gave the saffron party a foothold in the eastern state.

He had also worked with Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSR Congress, helping it craft stupendous victory in Andhra Pradesh.

The Congress internal committee's report is scheduled to be submitted to Sonia Gandhi at any time, reports said.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is not a part of the panel but his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is.

Last week, PK met with the Gandhis and made his presentation for the first time.

Parts of the presentation, a multi-point strategy to rejuvenate the party, were shown to different Congress leaders, including the party's two Chief Ministers, Ashok Gehlot and Bhupesh Baghel.

Most members have reportedly agreed to Kishor's suggestions.

In its report, the Committee also want a strict overview of the proposed changes to ensure the party's future, ideological commitment, and workers are kept intact, sources told NDTV.

Sonia Gandhi expected to finalise deliberations with the committee in a day or two and then have a final meeting with  Kishor.
