Thoothukudi, Sep 23 (UNI) A Polytechnic student was hacked to death by an unidentified gang at Seydunganallur near Srivaikuntam here on Monday afternoon.

Police said the victim Abhimani (20), who was studying final year Diploma in Mechanical Engineering course in the private polytechnic college was waylaid by the gang, when he came out for the lunch break.

The gang attacked him with sickles and murdered him on the spot. Later, they fled the scene.

The body was moved to government hospital for post mortem.

Superintendent of Police Arun Balagopalan, who visited the spot, told newsmen that it might be a revenge killing.

Abhimani was cited as an accused in an attempt to murder case and he might have been murdered by the rival gang. The police have zeroed in on the assailants, he said.

Referring to series of murder cases reported in Thoothukudi in the last two months, he said the police department has been taking stern action to control crime incidents. In most of the murder cases, the police have secured the assailants while the rest of them surrendered before the court.
