Police fire to disperse Gujjar quota agitators in Rajasthan, no one hurt
Jaipur, Feb 10 (IBNS): In order to prevent protesting Gujjar community members from blocking a highway connecting Dholpur to Gwalior, the Rajasthan Police on Sunday resorted to firing, reports said.
The demonstrators, however, kept the road blocked.
The Gujjar members are protesting in demand of five per cent quota in jobs and education. Their protest entered its third day on Sunday.
The fresh developments occurred in Rajasthan's Dholpur area when the protesting members of the community moved to occupy National Highway 3.
The action has not caused any death, the police told NDTV.
The police claimed that two of their vehicles were torched by protesters.
Demanding reservation for five communities, including Gujjars, their leader Kirori Singh Bainsla started a sit-in protest with his supporters on the railway tracks in Rajasthan's Sawai Madhopur district on Friday.
Several members of the community blocked railway tracks on the second day of their agitation on Saturday.
The protest is happening at a time when the Parliament, a few days ago, cleared 10 per cent quota for the economically weaker sections in the general category in jobs and education.
As the country is gearing up for the Lok Sabha polls, the move was introduced as a constitutional amendment, passed in parliament and then enacted in a short period of time by the government.
