PM Modi welcomes red beacon ban on cars, calls every Indian VIP

New Delhi, Apr 19 (IBNS): Welcoming the decision taken by the union cabinet to ban the use of red beacon on cars of all ministers of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called every Indian a VIP in a tweet on Wednesday.

In a tweet, the PM said: "Every Indian is special. Every Indian is a VIP."

In a major move, the union cabinet on Wednesday decided to ban the use of red beacon on vehicles attached to almost all VVIPs, including the President, the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India and all Chief Ministers which will be effective from May 1.

The emergency services like ambulance, police, fire service are exempted from the ban and will be allowed to have the blue beacons for their passage in traffic.

PM Modi was seen to follow the normal traffic very recently when he went to the Delhi airport to receive Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The reports suggest that he called a meeting last week to discuss the ways in which the VVIP culture can be reduced.

Chief Ministers of the state of Maharashtra and Punjab, Devendra Fadnavis and Amrinder Singh respectively were the first to remove the red beacons from their official cars, following the ban.

"And to celebrate such epic step for strengthening our democracy, I have stopped using the #RedBeacon atop my car ! #PowerToPeople," Fadnavis said in a tweet.

According to a report, Union Minister Arun Jaitley said that the central government would push for the amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 where there will be specification on who can use the beacons in their official vehicles.
