New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to light candles this Diwali as a salute to soldiers "who fearlessly protect our nation."

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, "This Diwali, let us also light a Diya as a salute to Soldiers who fearlessly protect our nation. Words can’t do justice to the sense of gratitude we have for our soldiers for their exemplary courage. We are also grateful to the families of those on the borders."

His wish comes amid reports of five soldiers getting killed in ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops in several areas in north Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, officials said.

Six civilians were also killed while several others were injured when Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked heavy shelling and firing from across the Line of Control (LoC) at multiple areas in north Kashmir, media reports said.

Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia told UNI that several ammunition dumps and multiple militant launch pads have been damaged in PoK while Pak Army has also sustained heavy causality.
